Nowadays, English is a language that we can’t live without. The technological progress in the new Post-Covid era and remote work will make us use English even more than we did in the past.
So why is it that even the people who were good in English at school, still have “issues” speaking it when it comes to presenting PowerPoint Presentation or any kind of work they invested in for months when it is in the English language. Schools are not designed to teach us how to speak English. They are designed for us to learn to read and write but not how to speak.
The majority of people who want to learn to speak English think that it is too big of a job to do.It might even seem there is too much to learn or even believe that it is a very long process and therefore it is too difficult.
One of the first things that we need to understand is that we all understand “languages” as not only verbal communication but also non verbal.
For example, if you were in a foreign country and you were searching for the local supermarket, you would be able to “express” your needs through non verbal communication with mimics and signs and the use of specific words known in the language or words of references in English such as “food” “supermarket” and maybe a question point in the air.
On the other hand, if you arrive at the English speaking office and need to ask where to find paper to put in the printer, someone who will tell you the floor to go to, the desk to go to and the drawer where to find it, might be a bit more difficult without verbal communication.
At Dalloway we put emphasis on the feeling of calmness and enjoyment of speaking English in casual conversation with integrated parts of speech such as vocabulary and grammar incorporated into those enjoyable conversations.
Speaking English confidently comes from one’s internal feelings and goals. To achieve those goals we believe in forming a rapport with clients, work on practicing as much as possible, and work with the person and his needs to achieve those goals.
Practice is needed to reach a level of fluency that most people aspire to and we guide clients through conversations and repetition as well as exercises in all forms to achieve the breach of the barriers.
But how many times should you practice? Let's hear what Bruce Lee said.
“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.”
So practice is important and so the lessons on Zoom or face to face provide practice with professional teachers who are here to guide and help as well as show the progress in confidence and fluency.
